Malantou is a common wild vegetable, scientifically known as Kalimeris indica, belonging to the Asteraceae family. It mainly grows in moist areas such as fields, roadsides, and riverbanks, and is especially common in southern China.
The tender leaves and stems of malantou are edible, with a unique fragrant flavor and a mildly bitter taste. It is a seasonal wild vegetable in spring. Common cooking methods include cold tossing, stir-frying, and making soup, with cold-tossed malantou paired with dried fragrant tofu being the most classic preparation. Malantou is rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, carotene, calcium, and iron, and is believed to have the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, cooling the blood, and stopping bleeding.
